Discovery Center and Ruby Pond
The City of McAllen is proud to open their first municipal LEED (Leaders in Environmental and Energy Design)-Certified building- the 3,500 square-foot Discovery Center, here at Quinta Mazatlan. The Discovery Center is the new children’s wing of Quinta Mazatlan and serves as an exhibit itself with signage discussing aspects of design, construction, operation, maintenance and solutions of green building. The Discovery Center will be the highlight of children’s visits to Quinta Mazatlan offering a Grand Hall for presentations, a science laboratory for hands-on activities, a cool covered patio for eating lunch outdoors, and a natural playscape including climbing logs and boulders. Along with the Discovery Center, Ruby Pond is the newest and largest pond at Quinta Mazatlan. Ruby Pond supports a whole web of creatures including birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, insects, and mammals. The landscaping around the Discovery Center and Ruby Pond is comprised of beautiful drought-resistant native plants and trees that support the birds and butterflies of Quinta Mazatlan.
The Discovery Center and Ruby Pond were sponsored by the City of McAllen and generous grants and donations from our sponsors: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, IBC Bank, Junior League of McAllen...
