Survival in the Brushlands
with author Arturo Longoria
Discover the history and culture of living in the South Texas wilderness with local author, woodsman and naturalist, Arturo Longoria. Longoria will explore the various forms of South Texas bush craft or primitive technologies used by native Indians and early settlers. Brush craft items commonly used include spoons, bowls, crooked knives, bows and arrows. Longoria grew up in the Valley where he roamed the brushlands hunting, fishing and learning primitive woodcraft skills. Longoria has spent many years studying Mesolithic and Neolothic bow and arrowhead making technologies and examining the origins of contemporary religious views towards nature.
He has worked as a journalist, college and university teacher. Longoria is also the author of two books, Keepers of the Wilderness and Adios to the Brushlands, and contributed to the books, Home Ground and Hecho en Tejas. He has written numerous articles for magazines on subjects ranging from both regional and national environmental issues to the crafts and foods of South Texas. Longoria currently divides his time between a home in McAllen and a cabin he calls, Mira Lejos, nestled in the hills and canyons on 200 acres of the Texas Hill Country.
The program fee is $2 per person and no advance registration is required. Quinta Mazatlan is located at 600 Sunset in McAllen. For more information contact Quinta Mazatlan at (956) 681-3370 or visit www.quintamazatlan.com
