Mansion with a Mission - Green Growth Wood Meadow Restoration Project
Quinta Mazatlan, is a large backyard in the heart of McAllen sharing its space with people and wildlife. The grounds contain an historic adobe home surrounded by native habitat which is home to many birds and animals. Quinta Mazatlan is working to restore and enhance the Wooded Meadow adjacent to the adobe home. Today the meadow is an open, grassy extension of the driveway, visible almost as soon as you walk up the driveway. But thanks to many contributors, that will all change.

Rather than being open and visible, this meadow will be hidden behind a thick row of dark green Ebony trees and other native brush. Birds, butterflies and lizards will dart back and forth across the path as they venture out from the protection of the new Ebony thicket to eat and drink in the meadow. Lush native short grasses and wildflowers will form several tall clumps amidst a meadow of colorful short groundcover, providing food for wildlife.

The addition of a stone amphitheatre will allow visitors to be seated and enjoy the bird activity in the Wooded Meadow. Visitors will be able to relax in the peaceful environment as the stresses of the day fall from their mind.

The Wooded Meadow will be the gateway to the natural world of our community, encouraging involvement and sparking interest that could last a lifetime in visitors. Exploring nature is about personal discovery. Quinta Mazatlan, McAllen Wing of the World Birding Center hopes to provide visitors with more opportunities for personal discovery.

Wood Meadow Before Restoration
Dream for Wood Meadow
Painting by Gerald Sneed
Today… the meadow is an open extension of the driveway.
Tomorrow… the meadow will be hidden behind a thick row of dark green Ebony trees and other native brush.  A stone amphitheatre will provide a relaxing environment for visitors to enjoy what is happening around them.
