4th Grade

Exploring South Texas, from Soil to Leaves

TEKS: Science – 4. 2A-D, 4.11 A, 4.4 A, 4.5 B, 4.8 A-B;

Social Studies – 4.7 B; 4.9 A-C

Overview

Students will enjoy “digging into science” as they collect and evaluate soil samples from our unique region. They will explore moisture capacity, texture, color, smell, and the presence of organic materials in the soil. As a soil scientist, students will draw conclusions on the types of soil, as well as climate, that plants require for survival in South Texas. Students will become aware of the direct connection between soil, plants and animals found at Quinta Mazatlan based on the availability of food, shelter, water and space.

Program Highlights

  • Explore the native Thornforest and examine components of this unique ecosystem
  • Investigate how our ecosystem supports migratory and resident birds, as well as how adaptations have allowed their continued survival
